With over 100 coaches on staff, Yorktown is often seeking qualified candidates to coach in various sports. All candidates will be required to pass an APS background check, complete several required online trainings, attend coaches meetings for professional development and show an appreciation for the importance of using athletics as a means for developing social-emotional skills in our young adults.

Final offers of employment will be made by APS Human Resources after an interview at the school level with the head coach and Director of Student Activities.
Head Speech & Debate Coach
As the lead coach for a large speech & debate team, the head coach will be responsible for the logistics which allow the team to function within the VHSL and WACFL league structures. Specifically, the head coach will work with the coaches of the five core areas – Lincoln-Douglas, Congress, Policy, Public Forum and Speech – to ensure all students are eligible, registered for events and supported through ongoing practices and tournament check-ins. The head coach will serve as the primary point of contact with the Director of Student Activities and representatives from the VHSL and WACFL. This individual will lead student recruitment efforts, arrange for judges at competitions, and monitor adherence to all school system and league rules. The head coach likely will coach one of the core disciplines but will work hard to ensure equity among the four groups, distributing resources as needed to the other coaches and student participants. Coaches in each discipline receive $3515 for the school year and the head coach will be provided an additional stipend (approximately $750-$1000) for their additional duties.
Boys Soccer Varsity Assistant or JV Head Coach
Seeking an individual to be part of a four-person coaching staff for the spring 2027 season. The successful candidate will fill a role as either assistant varsity or head JV coach. The soccer season runs from late February to late May. The JV head coach is responsible for a team of 20 boys who traditionally also play travel soccer. The successful candidate will be able to balance enhancing the player’s technical skill with developing a team atmosphere where players enjoy practicing and playing together. Utilizing the game to foster skills associated with social emotional learning, such as respect and perseverance, is a must. Prior soccer playing and/or coaching experience is expected given the high talent level of this group of students. The assistant varsity coach will work with the head varsity coach to develop players on and off the field as referenced above. Practices after tryouts run 3:30-5:30 pm on weekdays with games in the evening twice a week (5:45 pm for JV and 7:15 pm for V). Applicants should have prior high school/club/college playing and/or coaching experience. The stipend for the position is based on time commitment and duties and will range from $1600 to $3800.
Boys Basketball Assistant Coach(es)
The boys basketball teams are looking for two assistants to join the coaching staff – one at the junior varsity level and one at the varsity level. The assistant coaches will work with the existing five coaches to implement a positive and memorable basketball experience for all the players. Skill development is important and should be complemented by a commitment to utilizing participation on any of the teams to help develop young men of character. Teaching social emotional skills and establishing a positive team culture will be prominent aspects of the successful candidate’s coaching history. Prior playing and coaching experience is required. The season runs from mid-November to early February. Practices vary from 3:30-9:30 pm for 90 minutes each M-F with most in the 3:30-7 pm timeframe. Games are two to three times a week at either 5:45 or 7:30 pm. The stipend for this position is up to $1750 depending on time commitment, assistant coaches and availability.
Head Varsity Girls Tennis Coach
The head varsity girls tennis coach is responsible for all operations of a 15-20 person team in conjunction with an assistant coach. Duties include administrative, practice planning and implementation, development of the competitive ladder, team building and match play. Candidates should have a focus on creating a team environment where individual skill development, while important, is secondary to developing social emotional skills. The tennis season runs from late February to late May with matches 2-3 days a week at 4:30 pm and practices between school dismissal at 3:30 pm and daylight ending. A stipend of $4613 is available based on time commitment and availability. Applications will be accepted until September 7.
Assistant Wrestling Coach
With close to 50 wrestlers, the four or five-member coaching staff is responsible for the safety and skill development of students with different goals and abilities. Prior wrestling experience is required. The wrestling season begins in early November and lasts until late February. The stipend for this position will range from $1600 to $2500 depending on time committed and focus on JV or V wrestlers/meet attendance.
Varsity Baseball Assistant
Working as part of a three-person coaching staff, this position will assist daily from 3:30-6 pm on practice afternoons and 4-9 pm on game days with Saturday morning practices. Prospective applicants should have prior playing or coaching experience and be comfortable working with small groups of players on skill development as well as using athletics to teach social emotional and life skills. The stipend for the position will be $1500-2000.
